I have roughly equivalent offers to join AWS, Azure, Google and Facebook in Seattle/Redmond (Software Engineer), but I also have two kids under two and it's very important to me to have fairly regular hours and good work life balance to spend time with them. Obviously there will always be surge times required to make releases, etc, but I'm more concerned with the average day-to-day. We all know the stereotypes of Microsoft good, Amazon bad, and that it can vary wildly by team, but from those who work there should I strongly consider or stay away from any of those four in particular?
Google or MS
Go with Google for the clout
Not amazon for sure.
Cisco is probably the best tbh, I work 15 hour weeks
You are content? No guilt feeling? What do you tell your manager? First time in a job, I'm bored work very less (occasionally spikes), want to change as its diving me insane. Doing LeetCode!!!
I work on my business with my free time
Google for few years then move to MSFT. Both pretty chill from what I’ve heard, but you will get a promotion and raise for the move while the reverse isn’t true. Just curious, what do you mean you ‘have two kids undo two’?
Looks like a typo. I think he meant two kids under the age of two.
Yep, typo. Two kids under the age of two.
Is this for an engineer position?
Yep, SDE positions
I was just going to post a question like this. I am also in a similar situation and feel Amazon isn't the place to be for an engineer with young kid(s). Interested in hearing suggestions.
google is great in certain teams
Look at where you plan to live and commute times. If you don't live in downtown commuting to Amazon can take forever. My commute is at least 1 hour each way and sometimes it is double that based on traffic. That ruins wlb for me.
Microsoft is very family friendly. Amazon is at L6 and above dependent on team, I’ve heard. I’ve also heard mixed on Google, dependent on team and location. Save your kid’s brains and stay away from Facebook. Don’t peddle crack.
