Best place to rent at NYC for FiDi workers

Hi everyone, I'm moving to NYC next year and considering renting a 2b2b for my job at Financial District. Currently looking at Williamburg/Jersey City/West Brooklyn so that I can commute to my workplace in 45min. Anyone who had experience working at NYC, could you give some suggestions on the best place to rent wrt my case? Thank you all folks TC: 175K YOE:1

Are you single? Do you actually need 2 bedrooms? With your TC, the most landlords will typically be willing to let you rent is about $4k/month. At that level you'd do better getting a higher end 1 bedroom with more square feet than a lower end 2 bedroom for the same price. Williamsburg is one of the most expensive places in the city, more expensive than most of Manhattan even. If you're into the Williamsburg lifestyle it could be cool though. I spend a lot of time there and enjoy it, though personally I prefer taller buildings in Manhattan. For places in Manhattan, I would recommend something in the lower west side, Hell's Kitchen or south midtown. You could live in FiDi, but frankly that's kind of crappy in my opinion and the vibe is very unlike the rest of the city (narrow streets, tall skyscrapers boxing you in, not much light, artificial nightlife, etc). You should make a Streeteasy account, put your work address into it, and then check commute times from all the places available within your budget. Then use something like Localize.city to get a better perspective on whether or not the neighborhood works for you in addition to walking around.

You might have better luck finding lower priced 2 bedrooms in Jersey. Or you might find something decently priced deep into Brooklyn or UWS/Harlem. I agree with the above poster, if you dont need a 2b2b...dont get it.

I work in real estate here in NYC. Most buildings require 40-45x the rent in annual income. So that puts you in the $3900-$4400 range. Fort Greene downtown Brooklyn is a good area for commute to Fidi. Also Long Island city is not bad either.

You can get a nice place in Newport for 3700 ish, but your TC is way too low for that. Gotta go to Journal Square if you want 2/2 for anything remotely affordable.

Lol you want to rent a 2 bedroom in Manhattan with 2 bath on $175k yeah good luck. Bro get a studio apartment and establish yourself here first.

One bed in Manhattan on 175k is doable. 2 bed is a waste of money, unless you have dual incomes or much higher TC.

Dont rent an apt right away. Grab a room off craigslist or similar and learn the city. For FiDi, i would recommend Park Slope or Clinton Hill. You have to consider the subway lines. Don't do Williamsburg. Be prepared for shitty mta delays. If you are fine with a slightly longer commute, Bay Ridge is a nice cheap area but nothing in terms of night life.. gotta head into Manhattan for that.

Williamsburg is overrated, landlords are currently milking it due to the perceived ‘cool’ factor but it’s not good value for money. Most of the artists and musicians that made it cool are also no longer there due to obscene greed in rents. My vote is walking commute from a studio/1bd in FiDi. Good subway connection to Brooklyn if you need to go there and 1 minute commute during the snowstorms of Feb-May.

All the hip art people moved to Bushwick

Yes, L train around Jefferson is the place now. You can still rent around 2k there. Commuting to FiDi daily would suck though.

I live in FiDi and love it. I thought I would hate it, but now I appreciate the quiet streets at night, ease to transport anywhere (every train line basically goes here), and most apartments are luxury full service. I actually have an elevator, and laundry on my floor 😱 lol Good luck finding a 2b2b for cheap though. Downtown Brooklyn is nearby, and pretty nice. Maybe there ?

I’ve been in FIDI for the last 10 years. It’s great down here. We have a 1 BR 1.5 bath with washer dryer in the apt, doorman, gym and 360 roof deck paying 4K.
