38 old and have about 2.5m net worth.(they are all in stocks) I feel I am totally burning out at fb after 5 years here and want to consider retirement rather than finding other opportunities. I know it’s too early but not sure if I really want to keep working in tech company as swe. Where is the best place to retire with that budge? Any advice?
How much of this net worth is available to you to live on? 2 million in stock is different than 2 million in a house.
How so? Sounds like it will be liquid either way when they move. Ie sounds like all 2.5 is available, but it will have to be put to use for a new home.
Don’t have house and they are funded to stocks. Not going well these days tho.
Take the McAfee route and head to Belize. The only English speaking South American nation.
Depends on lot of other criteria. Do you have family? Kids?
Austin, Texas! 😀
Buy a decent sea facing property and keep yourself active with a small business and live a peaceful happy life
Depends on what you like. Pretty much any 2nd tier city you can buy a house for 500-750k and live pretty cheaply: Portland, OR Bend, OR San Diego, CA Denver, CO Spokane, WA Boise, ID Bozeman, MT ... Raleigh Charlotte Austin etc etc
You can live on the cheap in San Diego?
Yeah, you'll be a few minutes from the beach or in a small apartment on the beach but San Diego is pretty cheap compared to LA and San Francisco. North San Diego is amazing with beautiful sea cliffs and great Mexican food and close to LA.
Consider that you can use 4% a year forever and keep your 2.5mil forever.(including Inflation). This means you can use 100k a year which gives you an upper middle class life anywhere in the world pretty much . Obviously don't go to the bay area or to NYC
I don’t think it’s possible to retire at 38 in the US with only 2.5 million, unless you have some sort of stream of cash flow
You can completely retire with even 500k. It all depends on the lyfestyle you want to have. The safe retirement is that you can always use 4% annually
How disconnected are you from reality? Just by dumping it into index funds he/she can get pretty much a sustained 100k after inflation each and every year, while paying absolutely minimal taxes since that’s not earned income. You can live in many many places in the US with that.
Anywhere where you can live on 75k a year. Applying the 4% rule. But since you’re only 38, I would go for 3%. That’s 75k/yr. Either live in the US modestly or move to other parts of the world and live like a king.
