My younger sister is 17 and has been trying to find a career path somewhere in tech (Non-eng is perfectly fine). She’s a strong communicator but she’s also exceptional at math/anything quantitative We’re close and she asked me for help on possible career paths. I can help her with anything eng related but what are some good non eng resources, groups, or internships that she can take a look at? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Did you check girl who code? Adobe is very involved there. I recommend to look at statistic, data visualization, and play around with python. We are big in AI and ML and that will be the next focus. Given that she’s good in math and strong communicator, might want to look at ML AI product management or scientist. Or, go to the creative side like web/apps design.
Plus 1. That sounds great for someone good at math/quant. learning to code in Python /R would be great too.
Yes, she was thinking of applying for the 7 week summer program but there may be some timing conflicts. How do the girlswhocode clubs program work? Do I essentially drop her off and have her hang out in a computer lab?
Check out gnomes outreach program for women or now called outreachy, like Google summer of code, but for minorities. Excellent intro to industry / software engineering, friendly for all levels
She could look into python, pandas, numpy etc. These skills are the main ones for quants
I recommed her attending WIT (women in tech) conferences
Why so many suggestions for minority groups or WIT? While those support group is nice, I’d also suggest just interacting and finding mentorship from people in the field in general (regardless of gender or color). Get exposed to how to work with different people early on. Sadly most workplaces today are still male dominated (9/10 are men in a meeting room is not uncommon). Start learning how to assert oneself in a male dominated group... talk to people who has done internship, get volunteer experience in tech. Nothing against WIT, but sadly working with girls only tend to end after college.
Please bear with me as I offer a non traditional opinion: but quit Uber to show her people respecting women matters. Uber is a known tire fire. Working there is sending her a message. Think very hard about whether that's the message you want to send your sister.
Maybe something data science-driven as communication skills also imply she perhaps is skilled at reading between the lines of people’s behavior? Also MIT is obviously dope, they also have that awesome-sounding Media Lab going for them, which is pretty interdisciplinary from what I understand , so she could tailor her studies toward her specific strengths insofar as communication and other interests

Some bootcamp in UI/UX?
"she's exceptional at math/anything quantitative". What part of that made you suggest UI/UX? Stereotype much?
😂 sorry
