What are best vanguard index funds to invest.
100% agree. Most diversified US passive index fund with 0.04% fee. VIIIX (0.02%) if your company's 401k program provides.
VFINX S&P500 index fund
If you want some international exposure you can look at VTIAX. (Most your portfolio should be VTSAX though.)
vtsax, vtsmx, vsiax, vviax, veusx, vpadx, vemax, vtrix, vgslx, vipsx, vbltx. These represent a solid portfolio with all the necessary exposure. Dial in the correct asset allocation percentages to your own particular risk tolerance.
Asset allocation in all of them?
If you had enough money in your vanguard account - yes, you'd want to invest certain percentages in each of those funds. Broadly you'd want to decide how much stocks vs bonds you want... Maybe put 15% total between vipsx and vbltx for bonds. In this case the remaining 85% could be split up across the remaining funds for your desired stock exposure but you would have to determine the mix you are comfortable with (foreign, domestic, small cap, large cap, growth, whatever). The funds listed, if properly allocated, represent a good ideal total portfolio. Alternatively there are vanguard 'target funds' that attempt to do the same thing. Asset mix and allocation determine return in a buy and hold scenario more than any one fund you invest in.
