Best way to invest money if not buying real estate in the US.

Indian Origin. H1B visa. EB2 GC backlog of 150 yrs. All savings in US based savings bank account. What are the ways I can earn some interest on my total savings, or invest?

High interest savings, CD's, are few safe options. If daring, try ETF's. Donot invest in Indian savings. Bcoz of uncertainity over forex rates.

Wealthfront cash account gives 2.51% saving with FDIC insured upto 1mil. Better than a bank saving account Invest: max out 401k, invest in Index funds

FDIC insured upto 1 million? I thought FDIC was only upto 250k per acc type. Care to explain?

You are a sensible dude. Investing in real estate when you are on H1B is stupid, specially with the current market it is no no. Here is what I do: max out 401k, back door ira, HSA, 15% in Indian market(etf + bank deposit), 35% on ETF + stocks in US, 50% CD.

I feel REIT might be a better option than real estate. Anyone invested in REIT?

Facebook AttentionI Jun 21, 2019

REITs and Real Estate are very different instruments (inspite of the similarity in name). REITs are dependent on the rental market, which in turn is dependent on the economy as a whole. REIT ~= S&P500 but with dividends instead of cap gains. If you're buying REITs in a taxable account, beware. Their dividends will be taxed as ordinary income every year.
