If you somehow missed Catch-22, read it! In general I Google "best novels of all time" and I haven't finished these various top 100 lists yet. It's a good strategy: there are only 1-2 "great" novels I haven't liked but many dozens I've loved.
Just saw your nonfiction request. If that's the case I usually read physics, math, and philosophy. In physics and math that's limited to my level of foundation, but in philosophy I again go for the "greats." But I get a lot more out of the great novels.
Care to share some titles u liked? I like reading physics and philosophy too.
