Can anyone call themselves a software engineer by making let's say a todo app using <insert latest JS framework> and running a MySQL on the backend? TC: 150k
Sick of this elitism shit. Use the latest JS framework and SQL if that’s a faster way to get to the same result. You are a software engineer if your job title is Software Engineer.
The title software engineer doesn't mean shit these days
Actual engineers invented electricity, the transistor, the C programming language, discovered the higgs boson, built and designed the space shuttle... No one here that writes code and goes to endless meetings is an engineer degree or boot camp
There are plenty of patents on software. Those definitely count as “inventions”.
Scientists* - scientists invent and discover novel things. Engineers take the ideas of scientists and implement them at scale. Most SWE patents are related to efficiency, scalability, protocols, ect... There is a difference between computer science and software engineering (SWE is just a subset of CS). And boot camps only focus on the latter.
Don’t mean shit. It’s all about the mentality. I work with people who came out of CMU and still clueless compared to some kids who taught themselves.
CMU grad students are not that good, undergrads are much better
CMU masters is basically as bad as outside top 200 grad school. It doesn’t even require GRE. You pay for expensive tuition and get the degree. They do this to fund their PhD program which is legit.
Acting like people can't learn to do something without going to university is bs man. I know you want to be elite so you can have all the good work to yourself, but too bad.
TBH on my day to day job I use the latest framework more than fancy algorithms
As opposed to someone who gets a piece a paper then calls themselves a software engineer by making a todo app and running MySQL on the backend?
