I am interviewing for an Software Developer role at Microsoft for a position in Seattle. However, I am a little bit confused about whether it is going to be a good move. VMware is doing pretty well . I am not sure if my life will be better at Microsoft in Seattle. Please share your opinion base on :
1. Weather in Boston vs Seattle
2. City life
3. Compensation MS vs VMW
4. Work life balance
Etc.

I moved from Boston to Seattle and would go back in a second. The weather and the people are so much better in Boston.

Lol - people better on the east coast. I moved from Seattle to Boston and I swear the whole city is made up of total dicks.

A good proxy for how nice the people are is to revive around for a couple of hours in the city.

Weather: Seattle has milder winters by far, but fall and winter is virtually sunless. Boston has nicer (hotter) summers

City Life: Seattle has a dichotomy of heavily gentrified and neglected areas. Lotta trendy places, less "real" areas unless you're willing to go south of sodo. Boston feels like it has more going for it if you're the type who likes to have fun without spending much.

Compensation: Seattle ( and the west coast in general) pays higher for tech.

Work Life Balance: too variant to say in general. Microsoft has teams that work 80 hour weeks, and teams that work 40 or less. Depends on how important you want to be.

Overall I like Boston more as a city, but Seattle has more career opportunities if you're trying to do pure tech

I moved from Boston to Seattle. If you move to Seattle get ready for very less sun. It’s not the rain but it’s mostly overcast in Seattle. In summer Seattle is more beautiful than Boston. Seattle is less pricey real estate wise if you compare with Cambridge. But then also depends on where exactly you want to live. Microsoft pays more than VMware and if you’re in software will have much more opportunities as they have so many products. WLB is on you but MSFT has good WLB by far in the entire industry.

VMware has an office in Bellevue, so u could switch internally there for the better location.

Based on the levels.fyi link, it seems VMware is better for comp, so this is the best option 🙌🏿

Yes. That was my point. Comp wise I guess Vmware is at par or above than Microsoft. I mean I get annual rsu refreshes , bonus is usually 120% of the 17%target and unlimited vacation. Enjoy company paid international trips and domestic trips few times a year etc. I am not sure what will I gain/lose if I move to Microsoft

Vmware is doing ok. At least for now. No one knows what's in store afterward. I do believe Dell will not fuck up too much lest he will kill the technical talent at Vmware.

Microsoft is the one which is doing well. And I think it will do even better in the next few years. In fact, it is surprising how Microsoft came this far. Particularly Azure.

VMware is doing pretty well?! You are not talking cloud computing I hope. Then again, it's there anything left at VMware with a future? VMware is of interest because they are so behind they have to heavily overlay for talent to join. If you do not get from them as offert notably higher than Microsoft, you need to negotiate more with them.
