Single here, 4K a month for living costs. The cheapest decent/live-able one bedroom will cost you 3k in Manhattan or prime in Brooklyn and 2.5k in other areas (crown heights in Brooklyn, queens or Jersey city). Since you have a family, you will probably need a larger one, make it 3.5k minimum in Manhattan and 3k outside it. Make sure to find a place close to grocery store. Especially Trader Joe’s. It is awesome as things are cheap (not much more expensive than Boston or SF). Buying from bodegas or Duane Reade/CVS/Walgreens can get expensive fast. You will not need a car. Depending where you will be working, best neighborhoods for a family are Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill, Park Slope, upper west side, or upper east side, then LIC, Queens/Astoria, or Jersey city if you prefer cheaper. Expect at least 1k/mon for food and stuff expenses for your family. Try to avoid going out too much as it ads up fast. 220k is perfectly livable for a family, just not in the most trendy neighborhoods (ie west village, soho, battery park)
Thank you so much! You did not mention day care expenses which based on my understanding can get to $2500/month. Does your conclusion remains the same?
Ah, I forgot about that. (I am single) I’d highly recommend Park Slope in Brooklyn. Super safe (all the neighborhoods I mention are very safe), lots of yuppie young families/stroller nation. I am sure there are decent day cares around. Rent is pretty cheap, but few more stops away from Manhattan (less than 15mins anyways). Use StreetEasy to find an apt. It is the best. Don’t bother with other sites. https://streeteasy.com/for-rent/park-slope/beds:1 If you don’t mind ethnic (by ethnic, I mean Greek/Albanian/European) Astoria is a great deal. Cheaper for rent and groceries, safe, lots of great restaurant. It is not trendy or yuppie, (that’s why it is cheaper) but there are plenty of cool restaurants and coffee places. It seems that recent European emigrants just drive crime away while still keep prices low. It is like “keep it cheep” type of gentrification. They tend to be family first type of people. When you have hipsters move in, it soon turns the neighborhood into an overpriced duche-land (ie Williamsburg). One of my coworkers (he is British) moved from Williamsburg to Astoria and he loves it. It is like everything is 20% cheaper. Jersey city is good too. (Great bang for the buck, close to Manhattan with the path). I’d avoid Williamsburg (safe but too many hipsters, or young yuppies), Bushwick, Bed Sty (still can be bit iffy), Hoboken (great during the day, but turns into a Giant frat party at night, ala Jersey store). Another great neighborhood is Kips Bay/Gramercy Park. More young though but if you walk around 22nd st and 2 ave (Pushcart Coffee), you see tons of kids. Again, StreetEasy is your friend. Good luck
