Breaking into ML at google

I’m at Google right now on a non-ML team. I’d really like to break into an ML team. I have several papers and patents in ML. I joined google to be able to break into an ML team as I believe the ML here is world class but I could not match with an ML team (I’m sure you know how hard team matching is right now). How do I go about doing this? How do I further strengthen my case for it? I understand the competition is tough but I have good credentials - based on my publications and patents and math achievements I believe it makes me competitive for one of these teams.

Based on these credentials where does it place me in likelihood to get onto an ML team? Is there anything I can be doing in the mean time that would help?

Things I’ve brainstormed:

Taking ML code labs at google
Taking grow courses at google
Making open source contributions to tensorflow
Trying to join an ML team as a 20% project (how difficult is it? How long do I need to be working on my current team before asking manager if it’s ok?)
Networking with potential team managers (how far in advance do I need to do it? What questions do I ask them?)
Trying to partner with research labs on the side to try and do publications with them (I have relationships from my undergrad)

I understand it is competitive, that’s why I’m brainstorming and willing to do whatever it takes. I’m just asking for advice on what all I need to do to maximize my chances.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be a pure research ML team like Google Brain (although obviously that’s ideal) - it can also be a cool product focused ML team (like using ML for ad optimization, or NLU for assistant/search etc). I just want my work to involve an ML component in the day to day. Don’t even need to necessarily get to publish (although of course that is preferred).

Thanks for any advice you can give

My advice for the break-in is don't badge in so that security can't trace you, and do it around 10pm when no one is around but it's no so late that the guards get suspicious.

Is the appeal of ML the cool factor or is there a TC appeal as well? Field seems super oversaturated right now.

That’s just what I have the most experience in and I want to develop my knowledge and skills in this area further.

Got it, thanks. Best luck, seems you have a lot of xp so I think you'll do fine. Done have any advice (not in ML) except to keep doing ML in your day to day.

I won’t use that phrase, I’ll say it more like “I want to find a team that more fully utilizes my previous skills and experience”

Stop expecting someone to give it to you. Go and get it yourself. A 2080ti is not that expensive.

Yes, when someone writes ML more than 10 times, my comprehension skills go for a toss.

I’ve looked into the same (though no patents, etc). What I’ve gathered is the best bet is find a 20% on go/grow.

Probably makes most sense after making L4, or just before (eg perf recommendations submitted and you’re confident you’ll pick it up). That way when your productivity is taking a 20% dip your career advancement isn’t hindered. Other side of that is there seems to be much lower L3 headcount for ML.
