Honda dealer is quoting $450 for parts and labor. The neighborhood repair shop is quoting $250 for aftermarket part and labor.

How to get this fixed without spending hundreds of dollars?

Both the dealer and the mechanic are saying that the whole light needs to be replaced and not just the cover even though the light itself is working fine. And that is increasing the cost.

It never ceases to amaze me how highly paid people who use their brains for a living can’t/won’t figure out how to use a simple screwdriver....

Already checked YouTube. Didn’t help at all. Wish it was as simple as using a screwdriver.

Open your trunk and pull back the carpet to see the harness and housing assembly. This isn't a hard fix.

Why are you all suggesting so many time consuming options? What is your time worth OP? $250 is not that much money in silicon valley. Going to a salvage yard is such a huge waste of time! Rather sharpen your coding skills, watch a movie or just rest! And pay $250 to get it fixed. Priorities!

Uh, 3 screws for the light itself is much faster than calling a shop, driving there, and arranging pickup. The overhead involved is at least an hour.

Junkyard is stupid I agree, but getting a light off eBay is the most time saving method in existence.

Not to mention they’ll keep your car overnight and tell you they had to do an emergency engine replacement for $7,000 because your flux capacitor was about to explode and THAT would have been expensive.

Yo Goldman, It's a hobby. I started calling junkyard for parts and ended up in a barn find. Building a vintage electric Porsche is a hobby not many could afford.

OP already self-identified as someone who wants to do cheap repairs even cheaper. That's the type of person who might want to do their own car repair.

Pointing everyone in that direction doesn't make sense. Pointing them that way might.

Have you checked online for DIY tutorials? Haven't tried on this model, but it's usually super easy to order a replacement part and do it yourself. You don't need to be that experienced.

I replaced mine (other Japanese OEM) in 15-20mins. It’s super simple if you buy the whole assembly. Just swap 2 wires, 3 screws and you are done.

RockAuto or U-pull It. It's probably a pretty simple install. Unplug a harness, maybe a couple screws or clips, replace and reverse to install.

    YouTube will know.

Buy the part online by yourself. There are cheaper options to choose from. Take it to a mechanic to get it replaced. Thats the cheapest way.

Getting just the cover is almost the same amount of money and is really annoying since you have to bake the outer cover to get it off. Just buy a used one off eBay.

Rear lamps are usually really easy to replace if you can find the screws just swap it yourself, should be no more than a few minutes. Beats driving to the shop.

Any mechanic recommendations in Bay Area who would be able to put it for me? It doesn’t seem that the cover can just be glued to the lamp. The whole thing might require disassembly and assembly.

Never say "just" when it comes to things that require labor. You're gonna get charged over 100 bucks for that service.

Get a used whole assembly off eBay for cheap.

Search year make model replace rear taillight assembly. Should be able to find a guide on YouTube or google. You can search Amazon or Google to find OEM parts or go to a salvage yard to buy the part(if they have it). I've done multiple repairs that way(headlight assembly, door handle, side mirror, alternator, belts, battery, radio antenna, etc).
