Buy-side Equities NYC

I’m currently working as a FI analyst (not corporates) at a buy-side asset manager in the midwest, entering my 2nd year and have passed CFA Level 2. Im very interested in moving to a buy-side equity shop in NYC, how competitive of a candidate will I be? Will they view my experience as good even though its in a different asset class or will I have to start from scratch? What would be a good way to find opportunities? I haven’t had any luck applying to jobs on LinkedIn so I’ve been a bit discouraged.

You should hit up recruiters directly and email managing directors with your aspirations and set up a possible phone call or Skype call. Cold calling firms might work too, you just have to hustle. That's what I would do if I were you and wanted to gauge how I compare to other candidates.

You spend too much time on wallstreetoasis ;) but I don’t mean to be insulting when I say you wouldn’t be that competitive. Everyone has a CFA these days, especially the people applying to those roles. Unless you’re from a top tier Ivy or advanced quantitative degree, you are just another drop in the ocean. However, the more experience you gain, the more valuable you become, so don’t lose hope and definitely finish your CFA.
