Sounds great. But I'm looking to save money not effort. They charge sales tax and extra fee I see

For good deal, buy directly from an owner

Even if you buy from an owner you need to pay sales tax.

Get a used car. It’s much more satisfying than having to make large monthly payments for a metal box anyone can dent..

Craigslist. Also check company emails. Buying from coworkers is easiest

Check if you can buy from co-workers. I bought mine from a co-worker and that turned out to be really good.

buy a new Nissan Leaf. It’s dirt cheap and it comes with a warranty. It’s a terrible vehicle but it works.

Recommend Toyota Sunnyvale. Big dealership with a large selection of used cars of all makes and price points, priced to sell quickly. (And they do, so if you see something you like, move fast) Three day window to buy, drive, and return if you change your mind.

Are you sure you work at Facebook and not Toyota Sunnyvale? This reads like the spam mail I get from them ever since I test drove a Prius.

Search what you want on Car Gurus. They will show good deal / bad deal in your target area. Try hard to continue negotiating down on the good deals only. Car sales people live in the same realm as pond scum so stay awake. Be willing to spend several hours in negotiations but be willing to walk away.

@ueGT87. Yep, pretty sure. FWIW, I bought my car at a different Bay Area dealership, also got the 3 day return window. (I think this 72 hour cool off period may be CA standard but I *think* car dealerships work around it by classifying their used vehicles “as is” and negating the window. Unless you know cars pretty well, I think it’s a useful feature to be able to buy the vehicle then take it in for a third party inspection (Costs about $150) to get the all clear.

I always buy 3 year old off lease German luxury cars. Drive until the warranty runs out and then sell them and get another one. Doesn’t cost too much since you’re never out repair cost and they already took a big depreciation hit.

Used. Value of a new car depreciates by 10% as soon as you are out of dealership

In a pinch, check CarMax and Enterprise as well but expect that deal to be a somewhat rip off.
