My work at microsoft has been mostly C# I want to apply to companies such as google airbnb and facebook for a backend engineer position. But I know none of these companies really use this language. How are skills in C# and .Net Core treated in the industry besides MS ? Especially for the companies I’ve listed above for a backend engineer role? YOE: 1 year TC: 155k
If you learn how to write good code, then you can switch to Java in a second, and lots of companies use Java
^^ +1. If you know C#, you can transition to any C based language pretty easily. You may face some misguided prejudice against you from folks who have no idea about C# and still believe that Microsoft is the evil empire from the 90s. This has slowly been changing over the years. In order to make sure that you get your foot in the door, I recommend studying Java, Python, and Ruby and adding those to your resume.
any c based language ? so c and cpp included ?
Okay, high level languages. If you’re doing C#, you’re probably not writing compilers and probably aren’t thinking of starting. You’re doing enterprise apps and distributed systems development, services, integrations, etc. and want to do similar type of development work on a different stack.
C# as a language is fine. I think the worst thing about the .net stack is how everything revolves around Visual Studio. Anyway big companies like FAANG don't care. They just want smart people. Learning a language is easy.
