CA DMV real ID validity

I am currently on h1 Visa and for some reason my license is not tied to my Visa expiry. I get it for a period of 5 years at a time. When I apply for a Real ID, I would need to provide my passport, visa and i94 copy. Would the validity of the Real ID get tied to my Visa now or will it be provided till my original license expiry?

Anyone in this scenario and have gotten a Real ID ? This is for CA state, if it makes a difference.

Thanks. I guess I'll wait for my next i-94 renewal and then apply for the real ID.

I would prefer traveling without carrying a passport for a trip. Then I don't have to worry about passport safety as well. My DL currently expires in 2022. I am trying to decide to wait it out for renewal or apply for the real ID. If the expiry wouldn't change, I would obviously want to apply for the real ID now itself.
Even if I choose to wait for the DL renewal, I feel this would be an issue then as well ? My license would start getting tied up to my Visa.

At your next renewal, it probably would. When does your i-94 expire?

Say, you want to renew in 2022, you would be given till the expiration of your i-94 at that time or an additional year. Don't know of many states who still give the DL for 5 years to H1 holders.

Why not wait until your 5-year thing expires instead of getting a real id right now? The only real difference is that you need a passport to fly.

Better than carrying passport if OP is a frequent traveller

Fair enough. In theory he should have his passport anyway, in practice I agree it's easier to just keep it in a bag and show a DL at TSA.

Just for data point, my ID in WA is also for a period of 5 years.

If you are against traveling with a passport, then I advise getting a Real ID, regardless of how long it is valid.
