Can Bloomberg employees conduct algorithmic trading?

Me and my spouse are interested in algorithmic trading and would like to play with our own strategy (basically just machine learning coding, fun!) But my spouse is planning to move from small company to Bloomberg, and we know there’s trading restriction like sell after 30-days. But any restriction on algorithmic trading? Can Bloomberg employees have their own strategy and can we use the data from BBG terminal? Thank you.

Thanks! Also curious if Citadel employees have restriction on trading?

A Major one.

If you are on a Visa, forget algorithmic trading

Why?

I think daily trading is consider as active job, not sure about algorithmic trading

We have the 30-day restriction. Every asset must be held for at least 30 days, unless it managed externally (e.g. within an ETF or mutual fund). We don't need to preclear asset purchases.

Wait ETFs don't fall under the 30 day window?

Bloomberg GO<GO> Nov 12, 2019

They do, in that no Bloomberg employee can hold an ETF for less than 30 days. But the assets in the ETF, managed by its provider, can be traded as often as the provider sees fit.

Forex is exempt from that restriction if it makes a difference. If not, then my advice is just do virtual trading in demo environments to vet your strategy. It'll take you years to come up with a good strategy and if it's good enough you'll be willing to quit to try it.

No preclear but you can't sell anything for a gain in under 30 days. No trading derivatives of any kind either

You can trade crypto. No bs company restrictions there

Bloomberg GO<GO> Nov 13, 2019

False. Even crypto must be held for at least 30 days if sold for a gain

GO: it’s not true. Crypto is not a security, so no restrictions on buy or sell. Just that you cannot trade derivative of crypto.
