I’m on F1 from last 3+ years , I’m considered as a non resident alien until 5 years or change of status to H1/GC (whichever comes earlier ). I was unable to open Vanguard Brokerage account online and was asked to call the customer care. Customer care Representative told me that “Non resident are not allowed to open Brokerage Account” but I read a few posts online that Vanguard allows non resident to open taxable brokerage account but not IRA. Any comments/suggestions ?
Non resident has different meanings for IRS and Immigration. If you live in this country for more than 180 days in a year, you are resident for tax purposes.
That’s not true for F1 students. F1 students are considered non resident Alien until 5 years unless there is a change of status.
Yes, but be aware of what will happen to the account when you leave the country. Vanguard may ask you to close it. But while you're here no problem. You may want to look into brokerages that are expat friendly. I don't have a great answer other than maybe investigate what interactive brokers would do.
Yes, all you need SS number or tax ID from IRS and US address.
Thanks for the advice ! I have SSN and residing in US from 3+ years. I cannot open an account online and calling customer care doesn’t help either - what should I do ?
