If a recruiter wanted to look into someone, could they theoretically "spy" on someone and know their history, pay, gpa? I dont want some of my recruiter friends knowing how much I make , so curious.
They cannot.
I suspect the amount recruiters can see depends on the particular ATS the company uses. That said, the company itself will only have the information you give it or it provided you. History is only what you put on your resume or shows up on a background check (larger employers usually will), it's pretty rare for past pay to do so (although if you have openes a mortgage or major loan sometimes your pay at that particular moment to get into background check systems), GPA almost never (unless you're a new grad and released transcripts to the particular company) Companies almost never share that kind of information with each other and often effectively can't for fear of being sued. Several past employers have had ATS open enough even to eng that I could go back in and look at a resume for most of my coworkers. That's usually about it. So if your recruiter friends are at the same company it's likely they can see your resume (but don't most of us basically have it on LinkedIn? Or literally out on the web?) and it's possible but unlikely that they would be able to see your offer letter. The rest is really implausible.
Wow! Even at FANG this shit happens?
What shit? If you mean the resumes being accesible , I don't remember whether FB was one of the ones where they were and that's the only FANG company I worked at. I remember that their ATS was built in house and the same tool recruiters used at least back then was the one we used for referrals. As for the resumes, one of the first things I do on meeting prospective future coworkers is look them up on LinkedIn... unlike comp related stuff isn't actually what I'd think of as private
Payment systems are very safeguarded... having said that... if recruiter has a friend that is your manager or same upper report in ur current company then yes... but no one else outside of that reporting structure will have access... including ex managers
