Imagine companies offering one banana to new grads instead of $120K.
No.
Bidders probably thought it would be funny.
Money laundering

The art is not the banana and the tape. It’s the statement of price against value itself and the fact that you’re talking about it here trying to rationalize it. Absurdity art or absurdism is literally the idea of completely contradicting reality and social forms. There’s no rational way to explain why this is 120K. When trying to explain it only irrational logic can justify its price. So that paradoxical absurdity is what makes this some kind of art.
Money laundering is modern art all about. Because people who are actually serious about those things are definitely stupid af. And people who can accumulate that much money are definitely not stupid af or else scam calls will get their money before that duct taped banana. So why would rich smart people buy a piece of crap with hundreds of thousands of dollars? It has to benefit them in someway.
I've seen this argument a lot, but I never made sense to me. The basic form seems to be: rich people buy art for lots of money, this makes no sense to my peasant brain, therefore there must be something illegal going on. Maybe you could clarify by giving the procedure that allows me to launder money by taping bananas to walls?
1. Buy a roll of duct tape and a banana from jewel. 2. Get a booth at an art show 3. Tape the banana onto the wall 4. Sell it to someone who owns you 120k of cocaine money
And for my next act, a brown leather wingtip dress shoe soiled by stepping in non-odorous fake poop with the sole of the shoe glued to the wall. Opening bid at $100k
I bet you could step in real human san francisco poop and increase it to $1m
Feel like it's a prank similar to the "used tissue" company, https://www.vaevtissue.com/about-us

Abject minimalism. Why waste materials on a dedicated banana stand when simple duct tape will do. Excellent application of LPs.
There is a thing called “reusability”. You don’t throw banana stand after one time use.
An astute Amazon engineer would realize that duct tape is reusabe.
