I filled out a request to work on a side project and was denied. At a big company, they will likely claim it relates to some bullshit product and you cannot work on it.

+1 sometimes you just got to do what you got to do. Asking for permission is not always the best policy. Not trying to be judgemental here, sharing my honest views.
