When people talk about bad managers, can you work so hard that you will be recognized and promoted. Can you exhaust a manager by doing so much work that the metrics don't match your role and have to be promoted. Just a general question does the environment have to hold you down or can an individual become the beacon of change...
They’ll say you don’t follow direction well, out of scope, are insubordinate, etc.
From personal experience, if you are far more technically talented than your bad manager this is exactly what happens. They’ll also take credit for your impact behind your back.
+1 This happen very often if you're stuck with a bad (insecure and biased) boss. Unfortunately the upper management usually trust these type of people as they can 'talk' smart. Sadly there's no way out of this situation unless the upper management is smart and vigilant.
Yes, you can, especially if you put yourself in a cross functional role where you add more value to other teams
I wish my associates would do that, then we would both get promoted
A good manager would love someone like that, cos they don’t have to do anything to get you promoted then. A bad one would feel sidelined and will come in the way.
Realistically no. I've seen it happen on once, but it took this person going over his manager's head and managing their own visibility to higher ups, and saving the whole team from getting cut. So possible, highly unlikely unless you're a super genius and get lucky finding something high impact. Honestly, why would you? Having a bad manager can literally stall your career for years, while having a good manager can help you move up quickly and easily. Also working around the clock to show determination will never work in your favor, it actually works against you. People won't respect you unless you show self respect and by trying to "out work your manager" shows that you don't have enough self confidence in your abilities to think you'll succeed elsewhere. Or to put it differently: if this was a sibling or your spouse, what would you tell them?
You are an Indian right? Only indians have such self destructive belief in hard work. You may succeed but the likelihood is low and the toll it will take on you will be not worth it
Have you seen the (few) fb alcoholics on blind here? How did they get to that place?
Dont do that.. Been there done that
No. You need to learn that working hard does not give you success in this stupid ass industry.
Don't expect to be the impetus for change when you're not in charge. Save your effort for a place that will recognize it more easily.
No they will just take credit and get themselves promoted
Once they are promoted isn't their a vacuum, will everyone in charge be blind that is so many things happening over and over and that individual is you.
They will bring in a new manager who will pip all the existing employees including you, new manager will hire all new people and the process starts over.
