I'm kind of depressed that in order to keep up with market TC you have to move every 2-3 years to max out TC, even if you like where you work and the product you work on. Say you make 250k TC and 2-3 years later you interview and get 300kTC from your best offer. Can you use this knowledge of your worth and at least give your employer the chance to keep you by asking for "300K" at your current role before quitting? Or do employers generally tell you to pound sound if you try this? TC : 90k YOE: 2
Firms will tolerate this once and that too for junior folks who are at flight risk. If you really like you current job, you could always boomerang back for higher TC.

No external offer, no good raise in AMD
In my opinion it all depends on your role and how critical it is to the company and how fast can they replace you.. let's say you are in a position that is not easy to replace then yes also depends on your manager. The strategy you need to use is create a case for the raise and why the company should give you one. It is in there best interest to keep you at the same level but if you make a valid argument and on the verge of leaving financially it is better for the company to increase you salary rather than get a new person.
If you don't ask, the answer will always be no. The only advice I would have against this is if the external offer is a substantial amount they're not likely to match it or come close.
If someone else offers you more to leave, leave. If you stay you've just proved that you're only going to get raises at your current company if you go look for something else.
Leave the company and come back after 1-2 yrs
Some companies will do a version of level up to bring you current. I have had that done twice.

Depending on the employer, it’s definitely possible to have your employer match an external offer. But you can pull that move only a limited number of times. The most I’ve seen it done was an old manager who earned a series of promotions over the years and did it sometime after each promotion. He did it 3 times over a period of 4 years.
