For the h1 holders and aspirants, which would you consider as the better option for my case. I have an h1b and working for decent pay in Michigan. However it's a pain to try and jump ship on h1b. I also have a Canada PR but I've heard the pay takes a cut when you move above the border. So I'm stuck between sticking around on h1 with better pay and little career growth vs lower pay and possibly more growth and peace of mind with a PR. What do you suggest? Data scientist profile.
Well your pay in Michigan and pay In Canada might be similar
I'm not looking forward to a GC. Right now better pay would mean higher savings but I'm not sure if that will take care of itself in the long run in Canada.
Well if you can make above 100k in a city like Toronto plus the Canadian PR = that’s a good deal
Look 👀 at Microsoft and Google They are hiring a lot in Vancouver Why not try for that ? Lot more money and come back after citizenship is done.
What do you see yourself enjoying 10 yrs in the future? Is it a lot of money with constant fear of losing your visa status OR stability with decent pay? As you are in michigan, I doubt you making shitload money at present.
Being a Canadian born, worked there 10 years. Now in the US for 5 years. I can tell you without hesitation that the cost of living is really lower in Canada. You can get easily the same quality of life with 20% less of TC.
At senior levels, the TC difference between Canada and the US is much more than 20%.
If you only look at the number of digits in your bank account, the US will always win. If OP is searching a place to settle. Canada is a good choice. If he only wants to make the most amount of cash before going back to his home country, the US is a good choice.
Get the PR, quicker path to citizenship and you can always return to the US for opportunities in the future.
Only get PR if you want to move to Canada forever. It’s not as rosy as it seems. 4 years is a lot of time. Wages are seriously suppressed. Big cities are seriously expensive. Buying a house is impossible. US border agents frown upon recent Canadians who are coming on TN.
Well I don't know Hw long it takes in the US, but from OPs post it sounds like Canada is still a more straight forward path. After 4 years he is eligible for citizenship. So let's say 5 years and he can move back and forth as he or she chooses.
Consider also that the cost of living is ridiculously high in the main Canadian tech hubs such as Toronto as compared to the US.
Yeesh insanely expensive after taxes for Canada. Be prepared to live frugal. Healthcare is good, but not that great. Overall lower quality of life but good if you plan on having a kid.
Compared to Europe healthcare tax payers models (Uk, Germany, Belgium, the Nordics, or France), healthcare in Canada is in the Middle-Age. Expect to wait 4 months to get routine imaging such mri while it is a 2 weeks delay in most European cities.
What if your company provides you a solid health insurance in Canada?
Those who work at Toronto probably stays in suburb (North York, Scarborough, Guelph are cheaper than Toronto). Comparison between San Jose,California and Guelph, Ontario, Cananda below: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Canada&country2=United+States&city1=Guelph&city2=San+Jose%2C+CA&tracking=getDispatchComparison It seems USD150k salary is quivalent to USD85k (CAD113k) in Guelph (Toronto suburb).
Why don’t you compare Toronto to SF. Or Guelph to Fremont.
Fremont vs Guelph and San Jose vs Guelph give the near identical results in that site
Is better pay your only concern vs lifetime it takes to get to GC in the USA ?
