Canada: Raising Kids in Downtown Condo vs House

Planning to buy house in Canada soon. With my budget, I can buy old 2 bedroom Condo in downtown or 3 bed - 2 bath town house outside Downtown. I am torn between these choices. I want to raise my kids with good community and social life around. I dont think Condo life provides that. My commute to office is 10 mins. Same for my wife, she has ton of options. I have 4 month old daughter. She is getting curious everyday. I compared Housing / Town Homes around non Metro Vancouver / Richmond. Looking at Google street view of these houses, it looks like a village and not properly maintained. I am afraid they may not present the right environment that I am looking for. Surrey or Langley areas are too far. We may not match with the Community there. I have Canada PR. Planning to become Citizen next year. TC: 220K CAD

I would actually consider moving to Canada for 220K CAD TC for peace of mind. At what level & YOE in Amazon you can get this TC? Possible at L5?

If you move internally, you can keep the RSU grant. I did that some time back. L5, 3.5 yoe.

So your high TC is only till your RSUs last. Once your US RSUs get over, your TC will kind of come down or be adjusted to Canadian levels isn't it?

What has the timing of your immigrant status got anything to do with housing? Are you saying the moment you become a citizen you're going to rush over to the United States of America?

I am done with US ! PR is still temporary status. You need to maintain it.

Living downtown is overrated. There are TONS of great places to live outside downtown. Anywhere along broadway or 4th ave Anywhere along Cambie Any of the major burnaby neighborhoods (Metrotown, Brentwood, New West etc) All these are <30 min commute and way cheaper than downtown

Thanks, will checkout

Also if you really want a much bigger place and are ok with 1h commute look at Coquitlam. West coast Express has service direct to waterfront station.

why won't condo provide good community abd social life around?

Amazon owueydbbd OP Oct 27, 2019

Currently renting Condo in Downtown. Barely know any people here. Not many owners live in Condo here.

how will that change if you don't live in condo?

Zillow Group gentle Oct 27, 2019

Seattle here. I opted for the one hour commute. Difference is that wife is not working and she prefers the nicer house. I'd move in a heart beat if we find an alternative that works for us.

Do you have kids ?

Two kids.

Please could anybody from Vancouver comment on this article. Is it media hype or genuinely as terrifying: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/middle-class-gang-history-in-bc-breaks-from-history-1.5261044

Amazon KHCr70 Oct 28, 2019

Lol. So much hype. Reading the article the title is total click bait. Actual article: middle class kids join gangs; Adults baffled Sure drug use and overdoses are a problem, but claiming we have some kind of shooting epidemic is laughable

No comparison dude...if you have family go with house/townhome. Condos are for families without kids, young millennials, single population. Kids need a space for play, green surrounding, parks etc.
