If you were the interviewer and hiring for these roles: 1) Software Engineer (SDE) 2) Engineering Manager (SDM) What kind of candidate's character/personality would you prefer for each of the roles?
Manager - someone shows ability to stand up to upper management and fights for his team , instead of managing downwards
That’s a dumb manager move
what are the cues that I should look for to figure out if he/she has the ability to stand up to upper management?
This thread shows why getting hired is a numbers game. No one really knows what they want. It’s all just a “feels good, smells good” process
Shout out to all the hiring managers, what do you look for? What's your typical strategy to figure candidates out.. what cues should we look for?
Someone with a sense of humor
One that meshed well with the existing team dynamic (in a complimentary and not “you must fit in with my clique” way). One that aligned with company values and culture - again not about “are you like us” but rather would their traits add something new, fresh, productive to the existing dynamic.
