Can’t find a team in Google Team Match

Passed Google HC for SWE a long time ago and have talked to many teams now but am failing to find any that interest me enough to make the switch. Any suggestions on teams with interesting technical work and cool projects that make an impact?

Also open to suggestions on how to navigate team match to get connected with better fits.

Wow, someone on blind wanting to work on something fun instead of just focusing on getting a big TC.

In my opinion, these two things are related.

      It’s often not!
      1. Fun != TC
      2. Getting sh*t done ~= TC which may require cleaning sh*t or eating sh*t

Thank you for using '!=' as 'not equal'. More people need to use that instead of '=/=' which pisses me off. '≠' is acceptable, but most people don't know how to type that. '=/=' is like when someone goes ',,,' or '....,,.'.

Not really @shopify, != makes sense to anyone who knows a programming language that uses it as a symbol for “not equals”, yet means nothing to everyone else. Nothing wrong with =/= imo

The comments from googlers here make me disinclined to ever apply to google. And I’m an experienced engineer.

    • Google xUcq82
Then don’t, tbh google doesn’t need any more highly experienced people, we already have plenty. All we need are L2/3 who won’t complain about doing grunt work.

Honestly, the chance is very low to be hired by any hot team for L3 with 1.5 yoe. There are too many good candidates internally. For example, my team (a core infra team) rarely has anyone lower than L5. Most of our hires are internal transfer. You can join and do internal transfer later, if you get good review. Or, try somewhere else with smaller size.

    • VMware / Eng zxzam
What team/part of infra are you on? So, no chance for external hires?
      Feb 17
    • Google jzq
Very few external hire, mainly high level. We hired a professor recently for example.

This is not uncommon at all. Just find any team you can bear to join, then find an interesting project in your 20% time. If there were any interesting teams, they would likely be filled up long ago.
    Feb 17 5
    • How does 20% time work? Do you assume you’re working 40 hours? Or 40 hours + 20% time? Asking in reality not in how it it is on paper.
      Feb 17
    • Castlight Health cappa
I think it depends on team. My friend was doing 60 hrs and the 20% project was her passion and she spent nights and weekends on it. I am not sure if her work schedule was by choice tho - she is a workaholic for sure...
      Feb 17
    • Microsoft liveordie
I personally have not done any 20% project, but in general:
      1. You spend one day a week (most likely every Friday) working on it, including showing up at another office/desk.
      2. There is a long long list of projects you can pick from. I don’t know how easy/hard it is to come up with your own project.
      3. You are expected to deliver and meet deadlines as well. Not easy to slack.
      Feb 17
    • Pretty interesting. So if everything is perfect you do 4 days on your team and 1 Day on a passion project. If it’s the real world you do what @cappa was saying haha. Still beats 100% on a shitty project.

I know of people who use their 20% to do volunteer work too which is pretty cool

TC google? How many rsus in Uber?
    Feb 15 14
  • Google blindsun
It's an illusion that you will find good teams to join during team fit phase. If you find one it is by pure chance. If there is an opening in a good team, it gets filled internally. Just negotiate good TC and forget the good work part.

You can change teams after an year. And it takes 3-6 months for understanding Google, 3 months on boarding is the official norm for any team except cloud.

So my suggestion, join a decent team. Post a year mark, look for changing teams within google. By that time you would have much realistic expectations of work at Google. Not everyone is making the next gen cool product.
    Feb 18 4
    • I thought you need to stay for 18 months minimum with the first team? 1 year is enough?

    • Spotify / Eng qbeforeu
what is the norm for Cloud?
      Feb 18
    • Google come2daddy
Spotify, technically it is same 3 months but work is much more fast and engineers get production work much early.
      Feb 18
    • Google lIlIlllIII
Yes, cloud is faster. Was submitting CLs within 5 weeks.
