Career Path Advice 🤙🏼🙏🏼

Hello - I’m wondering what my chances are at joining another FANG company as a non-tech employee.

I joined Amazon shortly after college in an entry level position earning about $80k TC and have been promoted twice since then (4.5 years). I’m now a Senior Product Manager (again, non-tech), earning $200k TC, and I’ve held account manager and marketing manager positions in between.

I’m 28 and I’m coming up on five years at Amazon with great projects/accomplishments under my belt. But, I’d like to accelerate my career with my next move for the long-term ($$ and responsibility-wise).

Would these (Facebook or Google) companies even look at me? What’s the best approach on getting “in” and not being lost amongst the masses?

Of course they’d look at you. A good PM from Amazon is valuable to any company, and FB and Google don’t exclusively take technical people. The more tech knowledge you have the better, for sure, but if you can talk about great Amazon projects you’ll be fine!

Thanks, MiddleWest. Any experience bouncing between amazon, Facebook, and google?

Not as of yet, but like many other designers I get recruited pretty regularly. I know a few people who’ve gone from one place to the next, and each has its ups and downs.

I’ve only met a handful of people who are truly happy at Amazon. Most who’ve left it for elsewhere did not regret it in the slightest.

For sure. PM’s have a lot of influence at Amazon, so it’s usually a not-terrible experience at worst. Of course, I know a lot of strong PMs who get worked to death. In fact...if you’re interested in roles at AWS, message me here.

Tbh- I feel like I am a dime a dozen. I don’t have an MBA and most MBA-grads come in as Sr. XYZ.

I guess experience counts for something, but does it outweigh others my same age with less experience and an elite school’s MBA degree?

So far so good, thanks. But I do want to make the next step - even if I have to take a lower/lateral move first.

I know it’s not the best decision to stay at a company too long if you’re looking to grow.

I’m not even getting a phone call from Facebook, despite being referred. Is my resume shit? Is it just quantity of applicants?

Tried referral for a “stretch” position 1 year ago. Declined before a phone screen.

Applied outside of referral in August for a role right in line with what I can do (PMM) given my marketing and product management exp. Not even a phone call or follow up - just confirmation they received my app.
