Got a design degree, got hired on as a web dev. Made it to senior web dev within 7 months, spent a year and half as a senior. Self taught my way into a Software Engineering position. I am looking forward and now I need to plan a path for the next year or 3... career path recommendations??
thank you...I love my job, a bit more then the average person. coding is just as much fun for me as your most addicting video game. I am great with people and would love to manage. in my opinion obviously. I understand the view others will have towards my path. I don't plan on moving anywhere. I am actually treated really well. I took the title cut from senior web dev to Software engineer. lost senior but in my opinion gained more a creditable position. I have a second degree and am actually looking at taking some part time class here and there in order to work towards a CS degree or something. just so the argument of no CS degree will ever become a thing. I've been working the full spectrum of JavaScript, react, react native, MERN stack. etc.... been dabbling in Golang just so I have a compiling language under my belt too. I am actually doing my research now into the next step. experience is the key roll in everything but if your not performing at the level of the next person above you your not excelling. so I am looking at which level above me is the path I want to follow.
This is impressive and I love the hustle but in Silicon Valley you don't become a senior anything in 7 months. It takes a new grad 6 months to get their head out of their ass and any reputable company won't doll out senior with less than 4-5 years of exp.

congrats on the self taught success. not a ton of people make that work. in an honest, not snarky way I will start with the truth that it's very unlikely with 7 months experience you'd justly be a Sr anything. so now with a 2 years as a web dev you might be considered Sr but at many other companies you'd still not be there. why mention this? Important to think about how other companies will perceive your experience when making plans. if you only want "up and more" then in your next few years you'd be best to stay where you are. if you have aspirations to be a team lead or manager or architect then you'll need a lot more experience most places. to get there, you'll likely need to be okay with a downgrade in title. often times that downgrade in current title would mean a big impact down the line assuming it's at a well known company. in terms of next steps: do you like your work? if yes: do you like dealing with people? yes, then: consider managing. next step would be a team lead. if not: consider a longer term track as an individual contributor. most companies have long and fruitful roles for IC software architects. start establishing tech cred in major open source frameworks. also consider being a contributor to one or more projects. if you're not totally satisfied with your work please don't think that being a manager will help. it might help you but it will hurt your team. in this case, you might consider: - move deeper into the tech stack. start learning backend stuff - Branch out into mobile development. put your vis skills to use in a new area.
