I am a PM since past 5 years (2 years as SDE before that) and I am wondering what else is out there for people who don't want to be PM any more ? I have done CS in undergrad and MBA in post grad. If you or anyone you know have moved from PM to any other role/ career stream (other than SDE), please let me know. How hard was the switch ? What it takes to make the switch in terms of hard/soft skills ? Thanks for your help.
I was Product Manager for 2 years in a startup and now 3 years as Program Manager in Microsoft
What do you wanna do?
With an MBA, you should try Product Marketing. You might find it more fulfilling. BTW are you looking for a change?
Honestly, I feel a little trapped in product management. It has such a broad but shallow skill set makes it hard to give up salary/seniority for roles with similar skills. I think sales is always available and strategy. Depends on the type of products too.
Yup I am leaning towards product strategy too. It's more fun running a business than focusing on a particular product.
Dude Product Management and Program Management are two very different roles. Which one are you? Strange that you cant tell the difference when you claim to be one for the past 3 years.
Product Managers are generally called Program Managers at Microsoft
Microsoft doesn’t have Product Managers, their PM role is broken and not in line with industry
