Hey all, I'm currently 19 and at my internship I heard my boss saying he pays one of his developers 250 an hour for iOS/Android development. My question is how feasible is it to be able to even make 100 an hour to do this type of freelancing? Sounds nice to me 96k a year working 4 hours a day. Anyways, have a nice day and thanks! :)
They say the nice thing about freelancing is that you're free to work whichever 24 hours of the day you want. If you can demonstrate a track record, you can certainly make those numbers. But there's a lot of unpaid work looking for the next contract, negotiating rates, etc.
If it were that easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it? Think about it.
$96K isn't that nice in the Bay. In fact, if you extended that to 8 hours a day and look at $192K, that's fairly close to total comp, except it comes with health and retirement benefits.
If your boss is paying that much, don't just walk RUN away from that company. He is overpaying that person by at least 2x-3x. If you are really good with over 10 years experience, $100/hr is feasible, but you have to be one of the best.
why should I run away
because your boss is burning money for absolutely no reason.
This sounds like contract positions - contract positions are for a specified project with an expiration date, after which you are essentially unemployed. Each contract pays different effective rates and has different hour requirements. You would need to spend a significant amount of time ensuring your contracts are back to back to achieve what you are looking for, although it is possible.
