I recently got married and my wife is from China. She has property in China and so we were told by the immigration lawyer that we’re working with that I can get a Chinese green card. I already have a Chinese 10 year visa. We got her a us green card because we live in Seattle and want to open up all job opportunities we can to her. We planned to have her have a Chinese citizenship and us green card and me have a us citizenship and Chinese green card. Does anyone know if this seems smart or worth it? Does anyone know the cost of a Chinese green card? Do you know how hard they are to get or the advantages of them? Should we work w a lawyer here or in China, we figured Chinese lawyer would cost less. Any advice appreciated.

Foreigners that don't have some type of mainland China ancestry can not have People's Republic of China citizneship. It is basically next to impossible for a non-Chinese to have Chinese citizenship. There is a Chinese green card program in pilot mode and reserved for the global professional elite.

  • If you are applying for Chinese PR (green card) through marriage you have to wait 5yrs before applying. Also, in those 5yrs you have to be able to prove that you resided in China for at least 9 months out of each year. After getting the green card you need to live in China for at least 3 months out of the year otherwise you will lose it. I don’t see any benefit to having China PR status in your situation (ignoring the fact that you probably wouldn’t qualify due to the residency requirements). Also, you would be liable to pay Chinese income tax on your worldwide income.

Here is an article on Chinese green cards from last year. For those who are familiar with how China operates such programs are in pilot mode and eventually grow in scale, depending on how the government decides to proceed. China is going to attract the largest pool of foreign talent in the world during the next 2 decades as it advances to become the largest economy in the world. Do some serious reading about the mega cycles that exist that shift the pendulum approximately every 500 years, and this time the direction is to the East. The cycle is close to completion.

Let me just tell you that only few get Chinese green card. you have to be an investor, scientist, pass on some secrets to the government or really stands out in your field. There are a lot of ex-pat in China married to Chinese and they constantly face this problem.

Don’t ever get anything from China. US passport is the best in case something happens.
