Choosing between Google L4 and Facebook E5

Hey Blind members. Recently got offer from Google (L4) and Facebook (E5). Both the companies are offering almost same TC. Google is the vault team at Sunnyvale and Facebook is the notification team at Menlo park. I am very confused at this moment about which company to join and would like to get views from the community. Any candid feedback would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    If you value work life balance, go to Google. If you value moving up the ladder, go to FB.

    You are in a great position, congratulations!

    FB is higher level. Because of that refreshers will be much higher (120k for meets, but can be much higher for good reviews) so comp from FB will be much higher after only a year.

    Also L4 to L5 at google is not an easy promotion. Will take years. Promotion to E6 at fb is often faster. However google L4 will be much easier work, shorter hours, and less stress.

      E6 is hard; I don't think anyone is trying to "sell this BS". E5 is terminal so of course E6 is hard. Though E6 at FB is much easier then L6 at google.

      At FB, E6 is tough but doable. But E7+ is insanely difficult. I am E6 and E7 is not happening ever for me.

      E7 Promo packet is rigorously scrutinized. A small screw up in 1 PSC is enough to deny your promo in past 1 year. You need to perform as E7 for atleast 1 year if not 2 years. Your work has to be technically complex (only few people in the company are able to solve). You drive initiative that spans 50+ people in multiple org (company wide impact).

    I am going to be frank. You will progress slowly in Google. (Not sure about the vault team you can check your coworkers promotion rate). Go to FB. There is no wrong decision here.

      That’s not how I read it. OP has 2 great options and will be fine either way however they should know that progress at Google may be slow - however WLB at google may trump slow progress, etc.

      does it make sense to ask for L5 at G with 13YOE ? Please reply anyone, once hiring committee makes a level call, you can ask for an up level ?

    • If you negotiate too hard they can call you back for a couple of interviews to level up. But not without additional interviews!

      I think L5 at 13 yoe should be a very fair ask at Google. One FB guy told me on a different thread that you can insist for E6 loop at FB with ~10yoe.

      For Google all 4 coding round + 1 behavioral , at FB 3 coding + 1 system design + 1 behavioral. Practiced using Elements of Programming interview and Educative and some LeetCode.

    So they’re both for software eng? Why are you not going through boot camp at Fb? Better if you can choose your own team at e5 bc you’re expected to drive impact right away. If you feel ready to do that fb is def a better choice to progress faster at fb. But I’ve seen situations where e5’s at fb don’t understand their expectations and fail.

So I got the team matching even before getting the offer. Can you please elaborate the what it means to "drive the impact" with an example and what is the expectations from a E5 engineer. Thank you!
