Whats normal time off during the holidays at your company? We get one day off. And we get to leave early on Xmas eve (3pm). I heard Apple gets a whole week off?
It’s different with each company. I only get 1 day off for Christmas, as well. When Christmas lands on a Tuesday or Thursday, we usually get 2 days off (Mon-Tue or Thursday-Fri).
We take whatver we want. 2 days, 2 weeks, whatever
SAS has a mandatory "christmas break" where everyone takes off the week of christmas until ~Jan 2nd if i remember correctly. But in general it can be anywhere from 5-10 free vacation days (not counted as official vacation)
That's a good idea. Not much gets done that week anyway. I used to work those two holiday weeks with not many peopole in the office so I set up Doom on our network for us all to play. (This was back in the mid-90s). I considered it work related because Doom would only support Novell Netware IPX network protocol at the time and I had to get it to run on Windows for Workgroups. I learned how to get it to work so I consider it technical development. :)
Almost all companies, of any size, will provide Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day as Holidays. In tech in Silicon Valley, it is not unusual for companies to provide additional days so you are on Holiday from Dec. 24 thru/including January 1st. The exact dates may vary but it almost always revolves around those three days. Typically, tech provides employees with 3 holiday days, a weekend and 3-4 additional FTO days for a total of 9+/- uninterrupted days off
Amazon doesn't give Christmas Eve off. Back when I worked at AT&T a long time ago, on pre-holiday workdays, the boss would come by and shake everyone's hand in the afternoon and tell them to go home. We always looked forward to that and wondered exactly what time he would come around. :) As a consultant, I had one client shut down the whole project for the two holiday weeks with Xmas and New Years. No travel in and no billing allowed! That caused issues between us and our management as they then wanted to force us all to take our vacation those two weeks :(.
Apple gets 12/24-1/1 off
Twitter takes Christmas week + day after NYE.
“The day after New Year’s Eve” I’ve never heard it called that before
