Citadel Interview

I’ve got contacted by a recruiter to start Citadel SDE interview process, I’m told there will be a phone interview round, then on-site full loop.

Anyone interviewed with Citadel before? What questions do they ask? Do they have system design? Behavior questions? Are coding questions just leetcode?

I was a quant at Citadel for many years.
If you're in a front office role (quant, or low-latency HF swe), then Citadel is awesome.

As a pure SWE, it's not a great place. Joining Citadel as an SWE from FB is a bad career move IMO.

The problems you'll work on will be significantly less challenging than at FB. The caliber of your peers will be much worse. And your exit options will be limited if you decide to quit finance.

You may get a short-term bump in TC, but you'll be worse-off in the long run.

Almost all SWE positions at Citadel will be backoffice/midoffice, and they can definitely beat FB's comp for those positions.

My definition of front office SWE is if your work can directly increase the firm's revenue. Eg: HF low latency optimization.

What sort of schools did they go to then?

And why is that your only metric??

I think that’s a pretty black and white simplification that front office is just working in HF. If we go by that logic, anyone role in advertising infra type roles at G/FB is in the same bucket.

If you don't like my definition of 'front office', replace it with 'revenue producer'
My point was, if you're not a revenue producer (front office) at Citadel, your peers will be mediocre, your long-term career won't be great, and your long-term comp may be lower than at FB.

This obviously doesn't apply to software firms. SWE comp at FB (other than initial grant) depends on ratings, and not on what the SWE works on - like ads.

I don’t think any of it is true. Going by your argument, every non HF folk in engineering is mediocre at Citadel and in general at hedge funds (doesn’t make any sense TBH). Taking a look at Glassdoor trends FB staff engineer makes a median of around 450’ish. I am pretty sure even most decent senior engineers at Citadel and other hedge funds would beat that after 3-4 years. It takes around 5-10 years for an engineer to become a staff at FB. Also, I have little/no clue when you mean your ratings decide comp. if you work for a mediocre team at FB/G your increases would be mediocre too.

At FB, SWE salary hikes and refreshers are completely based on performance ratings - doesn't change by team. Obv that doesn't apply to initial RSU grant, which is mostly based on competing offers.

A SWE at Citadel with 3-4 years of experience working on some trade processing system or some market data aggregator will not make 450K. Half of that is more likely.

You're welcome to not believe me. I'm just trying to help OP make a good decision.

I'm not going to reply any more to this thread.

I think you should not since it’s not accurate. Even new grads get a minimum of 200k offers these days at Citadel/other hedge funds in any team! So half of that doesn’t make any sense for 3-4 years exp as you said. May be your were under paid at Citadel in the past and moved to FB but please don’t try to generalize it.

Which one is better for a tech guy, Hedge fund vs securities?

      Allegedly securities is more lax

Securities is on average much better. In general I think HFT is a great place to be for software engineers, especially on the low latency / strategy logic side.

My phone screen was a DP problem about picking the best time to buy and sell a stock given a list of stock prices. Don’t jump from FB to Citadel unless you’re way underpaid and want to squeeze Citadel for the money.

Depends on the role. I had easy front end questions
