I have received an offer from Citadel and I'm currently deciding the offer location. Could the community please let me know which would be better from a career growth perspective? YOE: 2 Current TC: 180K Citadel TC: 275K
Both locations are shitholes. If you want to save money go to Chicago. If you want a (potentially) fun life go to NYC. You might want to consider that winters in Chicago are brutal and that Chicago has considerably more crime than NYC by a factor of 2.
The crime rate in Chicago is irrelevant here given that most of it is isolated to neighborhoods that OP will likely never visit. I’ve lived in Chicago and New York and can say that they are very similar. You will have much more money in Chicago (lower taxes and rent) and the summers are amazing. However, New York will give you that center of the world feeling and the people are generally more interesting.
It’s funny when people say that and yet you can clearly see YouTube videos of Canada Goose jackets being taken off peoples backs downtown... Is OP not going to go to Wicker Park, River North, and South Loop?
Are you a SDE? 275 for 2 YOE seems high, especially in Chicago
Depends on personal preference. Chicago will be cheaper and less smelly, but NYC has a potentially stronger social scene and slightly better winters. Unless you’re an idiot, crime is not a major factor in either city. Potentially more career growth in Chicago since it’s the HQ but NYC office is expending rapidly so good prospects there as well.
Thanks!

I’d vote Chicago - generally cheaper and higher quality of life. Although tbh I’d say it’s probably smarter to pick whatever place has more people from your group.... better to be near the center of the action.
Makes sense. Thanks!
Can you typically decide offer location?
Yes. Fortunately the team I matched with has let me pick.
Apologies. I'm not sure if this is the norm.
