Can you please name companies that dont work with the cloud?

I can't name names (confidentiality), but I can confirm that there are companies that don't believe in the "public" cloud (aka only use on-prem, company-managed servers)

It makes literally no sense to use public cloud once the company has acquired enough talent to handle their own servers/hardware. Cloud is expensive af, and the margins are high for cloud companies. I'm pretty damn sure FB was smart about this and have their own on prem stuff otherwise they would foot billions of dollars in cloud costs.

Would you call that private cloud?

    • Google ajmK54
I wouldn't personally define that as "cloud" for the purposes of this conversation; by that logic, every company that ever used server infra would be "in the cloud" and I don't think that's what we mean here. I feel that some significant part of your infra should be hosted and fully-managed by a third-party.

To expand on the other Googlers point, Cloud is most effective of you expect to rapidly scale and don't have the IT infra to support continuously onboarding new servers.

Tiers r no hard and fast , most of the time for tier 2 companies difficult to get more then 250k-300k worth of stocks for staff engineer, while in tier 1 u can get till 350-400k easily

    • Splunk / Eng Zcbtk
Not true. A senior at splunk makes more than 300. Same at linkedin, oci.

Linkedin and OCI are tier 1 for comp. Microsoft is debatable as well as your tiers are pretty broad.

  • Rubrik / Eng knowbody
It all depends on what you mean by TC. Comparing public vs private TC isn’t very simple due to uncertainty and lack of liquidity. Also, AFAIK Linkedin outpays/matches Google/Amazon pretty easily. The Big 4 usually tend to be outmatched in base and bonus but provide security in terms of RSUs instead.

Shouldn’t Amazon and Microsoft be in same bucket?
