Hey all, Feeling pretty down. Got a PIP (performance improvement plan) today. I put in plenty of work and time, but the results aren't really there/are going to other people. During the PIP meeting, he/she didn't even know what I was working on, and so assumed I wasn't pulling my weight. I'm not here to get opinions on whether my manager or I was right. That would yield biased information because I'm the one presenting the scenario. Rather, I want to get some advice and see what other people have done once they get a PIP. I'd appreciate if you took the time to answer the poll, and if you could share any advice for getting through a PIP. For those who have not been in the workforce for over 6 months, I'd prefer if you didn't vote, as it's rather early to run into this sort of stuff. For those who came back from a PIP. Did it reset, or do you feel like you're walking on eggshells from now onwards? Words of advice, and encouragement are also appreciated. Thanks all.
Without knowing which company it is, you won't know whether it's possible to get out of pip easily or not
The company is new enough that there's not enough people from it on blind. I'm more looking for data points from the industry in general.
Ok. In general it's hard to get out of it, especially if you aren't able to make significant improvements
First thing you do after getting PIPed is make a big ass poll on blind?
No, it's been half a day. And it's been heavy on my mind, so I thought I'd seek crowd wisdom.
I’d get out ASAP, it all sounds like a clusterfuck
PIP means end of career in that company. Look for another job
Absolutely! You cant recovery from PIP, because of the huge bias that set on you. Even if you can make it work, you'll always have the tag on your back ...not worth it! Use this time to apply and rebound in a better place for you
Very well said!
Pip is always a step from management when they lost their trust and faith in you. Otherwise, they would have told you before. Only you can assess if it is worth fighting for the job. I would advice to do a self assessment and move on. (You the pip time to apply and prepare)
You'd be better off somewhere else tbh. Use the PIP as the motivator to work towards a better opportunity outside!
But do retrospect why you got PIPed. Finding a job won't be difficult, but you don't want to ill perform there not only damaging yourself but also the company who will salvage you.
PIP was the best thing that happened to me at my previous company. I was very close to accepting that software engineering is not for me, despite I enjoyed it years ago. I didn’t like my work and team, but I thought it’s because of cultural difference. All of those lead to PIP. I was fired based on results, but found my dream job less than in a week, with better compensation (+25%), interesting technologies and great team! So don’t be afraid. Honestly, I don’t believe in good career at the same company after PIP, especially manager is not on your side
Most people move company once they got piped. Best you can do now is leetcode and enjoy some unemployment benefits, I guess Also, it's important to let your manager know what you are working on lol. I guess work on improve that communication and collaboration skills? I don't know everything but it seems to me that you might need some improvement on that.
Are you at Amazon?
Nope, medium sized but intense startup.
