Current TC is 78k with 3 YOE at 27 years old, graduated debt free. The west team offered me a move over there for 100 TC provided I live in San Francisco for a year. Then I am able to move to any area on the west coast. I’m 1000% sure I’ll be living in a shoe on that money in SF so I will try to negotiate for 125 base 15 bonus. Is this the right call? SAP pays low but just to crack 100k in San Fran seems abysmal even though I’ll be traveling Monday thru Thursday. Cost of living calcs day that to maintain my current lifestyle I’ll need 140.
Why do they care if you live in SF if you'll be traveling M-Th.
Just refuse it if you’re not dying to move to SF. 100K is not competitive for an engineer in SF at all.
How much is your rent right now? In sf you can spend 1700 a month if you live in a converted living room with a curtain wall.. 2k is prob what you should expect to pay for renting a room. I think you could make it work for 100k but I would also apply at other Sf companies and see what kind of offers you can get.
I pay 900 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment about a 15 minute train ride from philly saving 1800 a month
You could try renting a room outside of sf and take Caltrain or Bart into the city. Some people take the ferry from various cities too. I would be careful about Oakland or Vallejo though.
Are you in consulting or sales role? In that case, you don’t need to live in SF. You can consider other cities like Las Vegas, Portland or Sacramento. If you need to come to Palo Alto or San Ramon office once in a while, I would find a rent close to those locations. 125k base sounds reasonable and ask for one time relocation package. Moving to SF Bay Area will open up many new opportunities. Stay with SAP fore few years and move to another company that matches market rate.
I’m a TQM so I’m at the customer site every week. The relocation package is 10k. I would need a SF/Bay Area postal code to get the increase. Otherwise I’d be on regular salary structure. 130k+ is going to be my starting negotiation point since SVNT pays 120 total and I’m T2-1 with development and audit experience
Try cities like Redwood City, San Bruno, Castro Valley, San Ramon, Livermore, Fremont, Morgan Hill, or Half Moon Bay.
People who say 100k isn't enough to live on in SF are lying and don't know what they're talking about. You can make 100k work. It won't be very comfortable, but doing the math clearly shows it's doable.
You'll need 150k to save 2k a month and live in 1bd apt in SF
Below 117k is low income. Maybe you could qualify for subsidized housing?
This is a good suggestion!
If you need a Bay Area zip code look in the east bay. Being far out like concord, or even Hayward/ Castro valley will save you money
100k will not be enough here. This place is a prison and you should avoid it if you can.
Oh stfu. If you don't like it leave, plenty of people enjoy living in the bay area.
I would love living there if I could afford it. All my business trips there were so much fun
