I'm expecting to get my PhD next year so I'll be on the market. Not interested in academia but not sure which industry roles I should aim for. What it is the TC like for the arch folks? which companies I should aim for? should I just switch to software engineering?
Arch positions usually get around 225-250 base with 15-25% bonus. RSU depends on who you join. That said, sorry to burst your bubble but no one is going to hire you as an architect straight out of school. Unless they are building a product that exactly matches your thesis. Or unless you are a well known scholar, presented at Springer-Ferlag, major ML/AI conferences, etc. At Google I doubt you might get higher than l4-l5 at best. Being an architect is not just about coming up with the arch/design. You need to show how will you practically apply those concepts. Also you need to lead the team - have you had a lot of leadership experience and influenced a 50+ team. Can you also jump into code to help a junior engineer with a Bachelors solve a multi-threading problem? You could try lesser known companies but the big names will be very tough.
Are these numbers possible for a fresh PhD with 0 experience outside of internships?
No, with zero experience you will not get those numbers. Those are for an architect level position. I don't think anything more than about 10-15% more than what a bachelors student will get which is around 125-150 base at the very max.
@op if you make google you can get an L4 offer and roughly 250-270 TC max. L5 is just not going to happen. @everybody else Computer Architecture has nothing to with being an architect.
This seems higher than what would google pay a fresh SWE PhD, interesting!
clearly you have no idea what I'm talking about π€¦
