I get conflicting information on how much Japanese companies pay, especially to their employees outside of Japan. Some say it is much less than american companies, some claim it is very much on par. Views?
No idea about outside Japan, but I've been with my Japanese company for 20 years. TC has risen about 22%, total, in that time. I'd love to hear what things are like for Japanese companies abroad, because as an English-Japanese bilingual, I'll probably always be doing Japan-related work.
Wow 22% raise over 20 years sucks balls. In silicon valley it's like an increase between second and third year out of school.
Wow that’s like 1% increase each year? I know there’s deflation in Japan but still... shouldn’t your company have promoted you based on seniority? That would have given you better TC over time no?
TC is definitely lower there. I used to want to live there but got kind of jaded after reading /r/japanlife.
What jaded you about r/japanlife?
Maybe jaded isn’t the right word. It’s actually really interesting to read for me. People tend to get fascinated with or put Japan on a pedestal (just check YouTube for all the “living in Japan” bloggers). In the end it’s just like living anywhere else, there are pros and cons. Reading about people’s true experiences living there as a foreigner was enough to make me reconsider. It’s fun to visit places as a tourist but living there is often another story.
Been at both Japanese and American companies (outside Japan). Japanese definitely pays less. Glass ceiling is real and painful.
Problem is not so much tc, but glass ceiling for non japanese,
This makes sense. Same as for Chinese companies, I guess.
This glass ceiling absolutely exists. And your Japanese had better be native like or else. No tolerance for someone who occasionally needs someone to repeat something.
