Been at Amazon almost a year. Joined after working 5 years for small-midsize companies. I feel like the work I do matters very little and am working on a fairly old tech stack. I’m thinking about going to a smaller company where my work has more impact. Anyone else feel this way? Anyone leave after joining a FAANG after a year? Is this just because I’m at Amazon or is G/FB like this as well? I’m considering G/FB and also Stripe, Cruise, Uber on the smaller side.
You could also try to switch teams
Yeah I’m for sure looking into switching teams. Just wondering if I’ll still feel the same after the switch. If so, I’d rather leave amazon as soon as my first year vests.
Amazon is huge. I would try a different team like @prestige says. Easier to get a role internally.
Go for midsize for sure.
Amazon is ewwge!!
If you want real work avoid Google (or atleast GCP) at any cost. I joined this year and been regretting it (5 yoe).
Is it just not challenging or legacy code base or not impactful?
Dude is generalizing a huge org (let alone company) based on at most 5 months. Ignore him, GCP and obviously Google has plenty of good teams. However, if you want your impact to be visible at the company level and not just within org, you will likely not find that at Google either (unless you are like L7+).
I'm feeling similar at G. Planning to switch teams and give it another year or two.
I get it. If you are use to making impacts across the entire org and now you are just impacting a small portion of a team within an org under a larger org - it’s hard to find your value. Do you give notice before vesting with last day after vesting or have to wait for vesting?
When you give notice, they can let you go same day. Might wait until vesting hits.
why do you think Amazon vesting schedule is as it is? apply to other companies, G/FB will be better definitely.
