How much are people in this role restricted to just front end work? I prefer to be in a position where I can work vertically on whole product features end to end. Also got the impression UI eng is not as respected as back end work, is that true? For example I didn’t meet any eng managers who’d come from the front end. Any other thoughts welcome.
The UI eng on my team work closely with backend to decide major implementation decisions. Teams may vary but in my day to day I see a lot of collaboration and no attitude towards front end/back end/test
Has working at Netflix been the most stressful job you’ve ever had?
It is the best job I’ve had!
It can be very stressful, but i am not stressed in the same way I would be for a company that is in decline or a startup that is running out of funding.
Would you mind elaborating? I enjoy high pressure situations, but not if being set up to fail for example.
You are expected to be an expert at your domain and deliver with little direction. That can be stressful if you’re used to layers of approval! But not stressful in the same way as having your job be in jeopardy for reasons outside of your control. You are not set up to fail; why would a company waste the effort to hire and onboard you to do that?
The people that don’t respect UI eng are usually those that never done the work. Personally, I don’t think it matters unless it’s management that’s doing the disrespecting.
