I'm considering a VP or C-level position at a smaller company, where tech is important, but not the core. I've been at tech companies my entire career (Google, MSFT, etc.) Still, great culture and interesting work. My personal TC is not an issue, but I'm worried about the TC of existing reports and what they offer new hires. I think it's too low, basically 50% of FANG-equivalent comp for engineers. * Have others experienced this pay gap? * Did you find it impossible to recruit and retain great talent? * Would it be naive to insist on higher avg. comp for engineering roles as a condition of my offer?

It means they aren't serious about tech / engineering. If they commit to a raise or give you autonomy on budget, go for it
It's your job to fight for it. I had this conversation for non tech role, but they still got stock options. They might not think it's important, you have to get people from that can get the job done, but are not identified top talent. Take more risks on hires or have some really interesting work for them. Or incredible work life balance.
1) good for you for caring about this. I was at a small (sub 100 person) start up and the VP of eng didn't give a shit. 2) I'd have a conversation with the CEO (or board if the CEO is young/inexperienced) and express your concerns. Are they not paying more because they truly don't have the money, or is it because they don't care? How are finances handled otherwise? At the company I was at, the CEO flew all over the world unnecessarily on the company's dime, and we had top notch office space and furniture, but paid about the base you mentioned for eng.
Almost all small-mid sized companies pay half of what FANG is paying. So you are not alone, I fact you are the majority. You may have a hard time recruiting top top people for every position, but you donât need top people in every position. Just need to hire good leaders, perhaps thatâs why they hired you for this very reason, and build good team with motivated juniors. People will come and go more often then you would like, and it will stay this way until you can establish the reputation of your team among the community, like blind.
So, basically, this company pays similar to Microsoft
Haha! Well, let's say roughly between $85k-$140k base, $5-10k bonus. No RSU, or options.
