Anyone moved to NYC mid career? Comp wise would be looking at 160-170k base, 100-120k sign-on (split between 2 years), 150k+ equity value (vesting over 4 years). Have a wife and family. Would we be penny pinching? Living ok? Note - Purposefully leaving out job, lvl, industry etc. Also could live either in city (Brooklyn/Queens) or out in 'burbs.
Consider sf !!
opposite of what we're trying to do, I think SF seems even blander than Seattle.
Have you been there ?? I don’t have both exp. I have spent time in Santa Clara n Redmond. Not sf or Seattle. Only reason I mentioned about sf is career development
I think youd be living just fine in queens or Brooklyn I live in California now, but lived in New York most of my life. More than enough to be comfortable in a good area. Lots of good tech jobs and fintech jobs in New York even without Amazon expansion.
Do you own? Rent? What neighborhoods in Queens are good for young family, non-NY native. Looking for family friendly, diverse, but also a good city neighborhood feel. Any suggestions?
Where will your office be?
Anyone done this ~2yoe? Seems like compared to the bay the big NYC offices mostly just have senior openings with a few exceptions.
2yoe the world is your oyster. Can't go wrong with Sea, SF, NYC. Even a move to Austin, DC, Boston etc. at this point can't hurt imo.
Also consider the culture, life, food and people you will be exposed to living in New York. It's worth the experience. Sf is pretty bland in comparison.
And the cramped apartments and subways you'll be using. And the bad weather where you just can't go out for a walk. And poor weekend hiking options. And some cuisines are best in South Bay
+1 for Seattle and Boston
I love Seattle when the weather is good it cant be beat
You are fabulously rich and can live in any NYC neighborhood you like. (NYC native who has never topped 60k here.)
Sarcasm? V worried about high rent, CoLiving, and taxes.
Not sarcastic at all; -millions- of New Yorkers raise families on a fraction of what you make. You'll be fine. And there is no greater cultural center than NYC.
If I were you I’d get a cheap apartment to rent uptown and then once you get to know the city better buy a place. It’s hard to find (but not impossible) to find a place with a small back yard or patio for your kids. I don’t think you’ll be penny pinching. If you’re cooking at home meals will be pretty economical. My friends buy giant hoards of veggies from the farmers market for a steal. Also, everyone has everything shipped or delivered here.
Why?
Career advancement.
Seattle is better than NYC if you are in software industry. Lived in NYC for 8 years.
