Dating for Marriage is Hard
Looking for suggestions/opinions: I currently work as a Data Engineer(DE) at a Fintech startup and my long term goal is to become a CDO. Keeping that in mind, would it make more sense to go into Tech consulting to get breadth of experience by moving to tech consulting or move to a FANG company to get more experience of workong with data at scale ? I have multiple offers in top consulting firms(BCG,Deloitte) as a senior consutant to work with FANG clients and a final interview at FB and Amazon as a DE. I am not necessarily looking for money atm more interested in building a career in Data. 2yoe current TC: 100k Consulting TC: 180K
Get into FAANG or product companies , better than consulting always
There is no conceivable benefit to working at a consulting firm for DE roles compared to FAANG. Tech opportunity -100% better at FAANG Ability to lead presentations/meetings -Probably even but the good thing about FAANG is you want to take up such a role you have so many teams to choose from Pay-probably even at the start but given benefits ,free food ,Hours worked etc you will likely far better off at FAANG.As you go on I’m assuming you will make way more at FAANG even if the stock doesn’t do too well
Probably good to have BCG (delloite is not very prestigious) under your belt for the long run. It will be arduous years though
I thought in the analytics consulting, Deloitte has a better name than BCG/McKinsey. Is that true? But In general I agree MBBs have a better name than Deloitte.
Deloitte has a better name than BCG and MBB in Analytics but overall is what matters
Do you have total of ~2 yoe, I guess Deloitte doesn’t offer SC role to folks having <4 yoe
I have 4yoe total and a masters degree. They still low balled me for a consultant role but I was able to negotiate for a senior position.
Senior management consultant or tech consultant?
It’s a Senior Tech Consultant. I thought you needed an MBA for management consultant
Data Eng consultants do the tedious/boring work that FANG companies don’t want to pay their employees to do. Go FTE at FANG, you’ll get to dig deeper on solving complex problems over just scratching the surface level as a consultant
Thank you very much, This is actually really helpful and in-line with what other consultants said as well.
Management consulting is one thing (particularly at MBB), but to me FTE at FAANG is clearly preferable to tech consulting.
OP which city is this role in?
Hey OP, I joined Deloitte with similar goal in mind. If they said you would only work with FANG client, it's a lie. One more thing, the advantage of joining Deloitte would be flexibility to work on a variety of projects from tech strategy to implementation. Also, I have worked on some very complicated use cases though not really comparable to what you would work at a product based but still not just reporting.
Normally I would not recommend people to join consulting over tech. But if your ultimate goal is to be C-suite, hard to ignore an industry pretty much tailor made for that. My suggestion - do both. Order should not matter much.
This is assuming your other role is strategy consultant. If not, FANG is the way to go.
Thanks both! Both the arguments make sense. I will be an analytics consultant in the Strategy and Analytics practice but I don’t think the work that I will have to do is anywhere close to strategy.
