Been working in the enterprise space for most of my UX design career - I always wondered how it's like in the consumer space. All of the products I worked on is focused heavily on productivity and less on creating something appealing and sexy. Since I don't have much to compare to, was hoping to hear from someone who had experience in both sides. What's your preference? Pros and cons? Is it easy to transfer to the other side?
As you correctly pointed out, there are no PMM (Product Marketing) roles in enterprise side of things. Focus is on marketing. Come to Linkedin - we rotate designers across orgs. Most of the company products are enterprise ones though.
Do you see a difference work wise due to the dynamic of the roles?
The product design process changes a bit to accommodate the difference across both , but a high level its the same. Also the manner in which you get sign off on your designs, and feedback for design reviews is different
Enterprise is getting the job done as efficiently as possible (usually). Consumer is marketing first, engineering and design second. Also, be prepared to always find someone to criticize your work, since consumers are fickle and stupid.
Which one do you like better and which one are you doing now?
All I can say is MS strength is in Enterprise. Apple’s strength is in consumer.
