Hi Blinders, So, I just accepted a FAANG offer because of its approaching deadline. At the same time, I’m in the middle of scheduling onsite with my dream company. I won’t renege from the FAANG offer for sure - it’s a pretty good offer and I don’t want to burn my bridge. I’m on the fence of if I should continue interviewing with my dream company or not. Here’s my simple analysis: *If I continue* Pros: - I get the experience regardless if I get the offer or not, which might be helpful when interviewing again in the future - if I get the offer, maybe it’ll be easier to get in next time? - I have a backup in case the FAANG offer background check failed Cons: - it’s a waste of interviewers’ time. - will it leave a negative record if I fail or decline the offer? *if I stop* Pros: - Save everyone’s time (including mine) - I’m not 100% confident that I will succeed this time Cons: - it’s a rare opening and a perfect match of my background. Not sure when it will come up again in the future What would you do in this situation? Any advice?
Don't be stupid, just time it better next time. Stop and enjoy now.
I would not. I believe you are good at what u r doing. You will be stronger in the future and have more optunities. If you still regret missing this opportunity in the next 5 years, you are not moving forward. Do not waste other's time if you have decided.
Offers can call through for more than background checks. Until you are on board you don't actually have the job.
Ignore deadlines.
Role?
What if the second offer is better? You say you won’t renege. But then you’ll constantly regret working there. I would either stop or continue & be open to accepting.
Would do you mean by either stop or continue? I haven’t interviewed onsite yet - in the middle of scheduling it so I guess I have to make a decision : (
I meant either don’t do the onsite or if you do then be prepared to renege your current offer and accept the second one. You shouldn’t be in a position where you join your new company with regrets.
Why would the background check fail? Ever? Unless the information provided to the hiring company is factually wrong? If you go through with the other interview, what is an acceptable outcome?
You never know ... just to be on the safe side : P Frankly I’m not sure what would be an acceptable outcome. I think I would be fine with either a fail or an offer.
Continue interviews. Don’t care about anyone else. Think what is beneficial to you. Be prepared to renege existing offer if you are getting into your dream company with better Tc. Everything is fair game and life is too short to think a lot. If your dream company is top company, you will never burn bridges as anyone will like to hire you 😀
I would be open with the other company that you have an offer on the table and see how quickly they can help move the process along. If you do choose to accept the offer you already have and then withdraw, just understand that will likely burn a bridge with that company and they most likely won’t engage with you in the future.
I would think the opposite. The other company actually knows that I have tight deadline right now. I assume they would appreciate if I tell them ASAP that I had to withdraw because the timeline doesn’t work? If I interview and decline the offer, I guess that would be a signal that I don’t really want to join them. They will more likely not engages with me in the future.
If the hiring manager is truly invested, they’ll do everything they can to get you onsite in a timely manner. I have friends in recruiting who have had folks go from an initial phone screen to offer in a few weeks. If you’re open about your timeline and that you’re still interested and they choose not to do anything, I think you’ll have your answer there. And if you do get an offer with your dream company, you should definitely accept. You are correct that if you turn them down (and this is for any company) they’ll be less likely to engage with you in the future

Nobody is stopping you from interviewing. Just to repeat, reneging an offer is NOT cool. I know you already mentioned you will not
Yep. I’m not going to accept the other offer even if I get it.
