Contract work question.

Never done any contract work for any of big tech companies and have a slight overall confusion. Is this true that, when your goal is, one day, to work properly full time at let's say Facebook or Google, then it is not a good idea to step into those companies as a contactor in the first place? I hear people say that you are almost placed in a separate basket now in HR when you step in as a contractor and it is at times even harder to become Full time after. I hear that the company have to pay even extra here to convert you, and they really really need to like you to do that (out of your contract team). Basically, I hear the contract work was never intended to become full time. Is it true that the company have to pay even more to convert you (buy you over after your contract is done) and it could be more expensive than just hiring another new applicant? I want to have a right approach even if it will take longer. Recruiters reach out to me with contract jobs and I am not sure if I need to consider them for top companies. (I never heard back from top companies) I am a recent grad and trying to figure if it is a BS or not that "it is a great way to get your foot in the door". Would love to hear your thoughts or insights.

Get into FB is easier if you’re a contractor at Google Getting into Google is easier if you’re a contractor at FB

That was one of my thoughts but I wasn't sure. Thank you so much!

Contracting is a separate skill set than working salaried, so while it is possible to move from contractor to salaried, it is acknowledged during the interview process that you’ve developed a different mindset than is needed for salaried work.

If the price is right and it’s the right opportunity then take it. It’s hard to convert as a contracted in any of the big tech companies. Go into it as an opportunity to learn and grow, so you can take the knowledge to another company. It still will look great on your resume especially if you worked on a big project. I recently got converted at a FANG company. Was there for a year at an hourly rate of $80/hr. Contract are negotiable, so make sure you negotiate.

Thank you, great insight! I definitely want to learn and grow wherever I go. From what I see, majority of people go in and ones taken the opportunity, they end up getting a great full time position in another great company after (if they will not convert). Do you know if people could move a company after let's say 6 month out of a 1 year contract, if there is an opportunity? or it is very bad?

It’s possible, contract different based on the agency. You should be able to leave for a full-time opportunity. It’s been done several times.
