What's the best ways to convert to a FTE from a contractor position at an auto company? Is this pretty common and how likely am I to be able to convert?
Depends on your current contractor position, the long term future of your project, where the company is investing and many other factors. But yes it does happen. I’ve been hired on as FTE 2 times by auto companies.
Depends on your Visa status as well
How long have you been at the company?
Definitely possible and I have seen it happen both at my previous job (a Tier 1 supplier) and my current job (an OEM). In almost all cases, the contractors had been in that position for a few years and had shown themselves to be indispensable. Visa status is also a factor - in a couple of cases, the contractors were able to switch to FTE roles once they had acquired a GC or were on track for getting one
Was there a raise in TC when contractors go FT?
Do great work, embrace the company culture, and it can happen. It took me about 2 years working as a contractor before I became a FTE. Sometimes I wonder if it was as simple as being in the right place at the right time, but that was selling myself short. I have critical, in-demand skills, so that made the process easier.
What contractor company were you with during that time?
Halo Group (renamed Fahrenheit IT)
